What coloring or art supplies do you pack for kids when camping?

Hi everyone,

I am planning a small countryside camping trip with my kids later this month and could really use some advice from other parents and art lovers from here. Yes, we are hoping to choose Road Smiles Campervan Rental to take us to a quiet spot in the UK countryside around mid-March. In this regard, I have been looking at a few places that seem to be open early in the season and allow campervans, like Trevornick Holiday Park in Cornwall, Red Shoot Camping Park in the New Forest, and a couple of Camping and Caravanning Club sites. The idea is just a relaxed weekend: walks, a campfire if allowed, and letting the kids enjoy being outdoors instead of glued to screens.

The one thing I am trying to figure out is what kind of coloring or art activities work best when you are camping. I want to pack something creative for the evenings in the campervan or if the weather turns a bit grey (which… let’s be honest, it probably will in March).

So far, we are thinking about things like:

– A small coloring book with nature themes (animals, forests, birds, that sort of thing)

– Washable markers or crayons that won’t make a disaster inside the campervan

– A small watercolor travel set with a refillable brush

– Maybe a nature scavenger sketchbook so they can draw leaves, trees, or things they spot on walks

However, I am not sure what actually works well in a campervan setting without creating a mess or losing pieces everywhere. That is why I have a few questions for other parents here:

What art or coloring supplies do your kids actually use while camping? Also, do you think watercolor sets work, or are they more trouble than they are worth?

Similarly, any compact art kits you would recommend for travel? Or have you tried any nature-based drawing activities that keep kids engaged outdoors?

All in all, I’d love to hear what has worked for your family. I am trying to keep things simple but still give the kids something creative to do while we are out in the countryside.
