Hey guys, so I’m putting together a pretty ambitious Russia itinerary and Moscow is the first stop. I love having the freedom of my own car when I travel but everyone I mention this to looks at me like I’m crazy. Is getting a Moscow rental car as a foreign visitor genuinely manageable or are people right to be skeptical? Would love to hear from someone who’s actually done it.

Done it once and survived to tell the tale. The city center is intense but once you figure out the ring roads it starts making sense. GPS is your best friend there, seriously don’t attempt it without one. Outside the city the driving is actually pretty relaxed.

Moscow rental car options are more varied than most people expect, decent range from budget to premium depending on what the trip calls for. The city driving has a reputation but it’s honestly no worse than any other major European capital once you’ve had a day to adjust. Where it really pays off is for day trips, there’s a lot worth seeing within a couple hours of Moscow that just isn’t practical any other way. Operators that regularly handle international clients tend to make the whole process pretty painless. One worth looking into is https://getrentacar.com/en-US/russia/moscow
