How does check-in work at Amsterdam International Airport?

I’m flying back to the States via Schiphol, and I’m bringing a bunch of souvenirs. I usually check in for my flights online using the iPhone app, but this time I definitely need to check my suitcase. I’ve heard that in Amsterdam, they’ve almost completely removed staff from the check-in counters and replaced them with some kind of automated drop-off system. I’ve never dealt with anything like this at our airports, and I’m a little worried I might mess up when attaching the tag. What if the machine malfunctions, my suitcase ends up in the wrong place, and I’m left without my belongings when I get home?

Can you explain how this self-service baggage drop-off system at Schiphol works from a technical standpoint? Is it difficult to figure everything out on your own without perfect knowledge of the language, even if you follow the on-screen instructions exactly? And is there at least one live agent there in case my bag is overweight or the machine refuses to accept it?

No worries—those machines are designed to be as user-friendly as possible for passengers; even a child can figure them out intuitively. You walk up to the scanner, hold up your boarding pass on your phone, the gate opens, and it dispenses a sticky strip that you simply attach to your suitcase handle. Then the suitcase closes and moves along the conveyor belt, and the machine gives you a tear-off receipt. The whole thing takes about forty seconds. When I flew there myself, I read up on Amsterdam Airport beforehand. Oh, and there are always airport staff on duty next to these rows of terminals. So if anything goes wrong, they’ll come right over and help you. So don’t be afraid of technology—it really saves a ton of time. What’s your airline’s weight limit—23 kg?
