Has anyone left their car at Madrid Airport for a few days?

My friends and I are heading to Madrid for a few days to see a soccer game. We’re flying on a budget, so we’re trying to plan every little detail. My friend insists that it’s easier and cheaper to rent a car right at Barajas Airport and drive around in it, but I’m not so sure.

I also want to ask: what’s the situation with the official parking lots near the terminals? Is it actually possible to leave the car there for a couple of days without paying an arm and a leg? And if we decide not to rent a car, what’s the best and cheapest way to get to the very center, near Plaza de Cibeles, since we’re arriving late at night?

From personal experience, I’d say renting a car just to get around Madrid isn’t the best idea. Parking in the city center is a real headache. As for the airport, the short-term parking lots near the terminals are expensive, but the long-term lot, Larga Estancia, has much lower rates and free shuttles to the terminals. If you arrive late, the 24-hour Express Airport Bus is the best way to get to Plaza de Cibeles.
