Hey everyone, I’m in a pretty stressful situation and could use some advice. A friend of mine in the US just got contacted by federal agents about some hacking allegations from a few years back. It’s totally blindsided him. He’s not some mastermind, just a guy who did some stupid stuff when he was younger. Now he’s terrified. We’re looking for someone who really knows this area, not just a general lawyer. What do you even look for when choosing a lawyer for this kind of thing?

This is serious, and he needs to find someone who specializes in this specific area of law. General criminal defense lawyers might not understand the technical evidence or the nuances of federal cybercrime statutes. The right attorney will have experience with the government’s investigation methods and know how to challenge digital evidence. You can find a cybersecurity criminal defense lawyer here https://arkadybukhlawfirm.com/practice-areas/criminal-defense-cyber-crime/ . He should not talk to anyone without legal counsel present.

Tell your friend to preserve all records and absolutely not try to delete or alter anything. That can be a separate crime. He should wait until he has an attorney before doing anything else.
