My brother really wants to be more active and meet new people. He is tired of just staying home and watching TV. Are there any clubs or community groups that are specifically for adults with disabilities? I want him to find a place where he can be himself and make some real friends. Does anyone have any experience with this in NYC? We really need some fresh ideas for social activities.

It can be so hard to find genuine social connections in a city this big but it is so worth the effort. My brother used to just stay in his room all day and it was really depressing for everyone involved. We found a great agency for developmental disabilities https://www.gccnyc.org/ that changed his whole outlook on life. They have these amazing community outings where they go to museums or just hang out in the park together. It is very low pressure and everyone is super welcoming to new faces. He has made friends that he actually texts now which I never thought would happen. It really helps with that feeling of isolation that comes with being stuck at home. Having a regular schedule of fun things to look forward to has improved his mood so much. You should definitely check out their calendar because they always have something new going on. It is a great way for him to gain some confidence and independence.
