E2E testing, short for end to end testing, is a type of software testing that verifies complete user workflows from start to finish. Unlike unit tests that focus on individual functions, or integration tests that check interactions between a few components, E2E tests simulate real user scenarios across the entire system—including the frontend, APIs, backend services, databases, and any external services involved. This helps ensure that all pieces of an application work seamlessly together in real-world conditions.

The main goal of E2E testing is to validate that core business processes behave as expected for users in a production-like environment. For example, an E2E test for an e-commerce site might start with a user logging in, adding items to a cart, checking out, and verifying order confirmation—just like a real customer would do. By testing workflows end to end, teams can catch issues that might be missed by more isolated tests.

E2E tests are particularly valuable in complex applications where multiple services and interfaces must interact correctly. They act as a final safety net before releasing software, giving teams confidence that critical user journeys are stable and reliable.
