I want to visit the Terezín Memorial to learn more about WWII history, but I’m worried it might be too difficult to navigate the different sites (the Small Fortress, the Ghetto Museum, etc.) on my own. Is it better to go with a guide? Also, how much time should I realistically spend there to really understand the history without feeling like I’m rushing through a very sensitive place?

Terezín is a very powerful and moving experience, and I strongly recommend going with a professional guide. There is so much nuance and “hidden” history there that you simply won’t see by just walking around. A guide can explain the daily life in the ghetto and the propaganda the Nazis used, which adds so much depth to the visit. Realistically, you need about 5 to 6 hours to see the Small Fortress, the museum, and the crematorium with the respect they deserve. Many people find it quite emotional, so having a tour that handles all the logistics (buses, tickets, timing) allows you to focus on the history rather than worrying about the next bus back to Prague.
You can find some very respectful and highly-rated guided tours here https://alle.travel/en/prague/category/day-trips that provide a lot of context. It’s not an “easy” day trip in terms of emotions, but it is incredibly important for understanding European history. Make sure to bring some water and a light snack, as there aren’t many places to eat around the memorial itself.

I agree, it seems like a place where context is everything. I’ll definitely look for a guide who specializes in that period. Thank you for the advice on the timing and the snacks too!
