A hockey team can have a strong defence but still struggle when its goaltender is going through a difficult period. On the other hand, an outstanding performance between the posts can make an average team surprisingly competitive. Do you examine the goaltender’s recent statistics separately from the team’s overall defensive record? How many recent appearances do you consider enough to identify a meaningful change in form?

Evaluating goaltenders completely separately from a team’s defensive unit is essential. A solid defense can suppress shot volume, but if the starter is letting in soft goals on low high-danger chances, the whole system breaks down. Look closely at save percentage over the last 5 to 7 starts rather than full-season averages. When betting on NHL puck lines or totals, catching a cold streak early gives you a massive advantage before oddsmakers fully adjust the lines to match reality.
