If you are wondering what was newton’s third law, it is one of the three fundamental laws of motion introduced by Sir Isaac Newton. The law explains how forces occur between interacting objects and is commonly summarized by the idea that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Newton’s third law is important because forces do not occur in isolation. When one object exerts a force on another object, the second object simultaneously exerts an equal force in the opposite direction on the first. Importantly, these forces act on two different objects, so they do not simply cancel each other out.

For example, when you push against a wall, your hands apply a force to the wall, while the wall applies an equal force back toward you. The same principle can be observed when walking, swimming, jumping, throwing a ball, or launching a rocket. In walking, your foot pushes backward against the ground, and the ground provides a forward reaction force that helps move you ahead.

The mathematical form of Newton’s third law is often written as F₍AB₎ = −F₍BA₎, showing that the forces have equal magnitude but opposite directions. Understanding this relationship is especially useful when studying force diagrams, momentum, collisions, and real-world mechanical systems.

A common misconception is that the action and reaction forces cancel each other. They do not, because each force acts on a different object. For instance, when a book rests on a table, the forces acting upward and downward on the book can balance, but those two forces are not a third-law pair. The actual third-law partners involve the book and Earth or the book and table as separate interacting objects.

Learning what was newton’s third law provides a foundation for understanding many everyday physical events. From the movement of a person to the propulsion of spacecraft, Newton’s third law remains an essential concept in classical mechanics and physics education.
