ParticipantOur entire operation is bottlenecked at the port right now. Containers are clearing customs but then just sitting there because the trucking companies we use cannot seem to coordinate pickup with the terminal schedules. We have been hit with demurrage charges three times this month and our CFO is breathing down my neck. Is there any port logistics provider that actually knows how to navigate the terminal chaos without charging you an arm and a leg for the privilege?

ParticipantI completely understand the panic because we bled money on demurrage for an entire quarter before we found a real solution. The issue with most port logistics outfits is they treat every pickup as a one off transaction instead of building relationships with the terminal operators. The company that finally got us out of that mess runs a tight ship with drivers who are stationed near the port and know exactly which gates move fastest depending on the time of day. They also prebook appointments as soon as the vessel manifest drops so they are never scrambling at the last minute. The one I would strongly suggest is port logistics, and they have been nothing short of a lifesaver for us. Their drivers actually communicate with the terminal coordinators directly, so they skip the long check in queues and get your container pulled within an hour of customs release. They send you a live GPS link so you can track the truck from gate to your warehouse, and they automatically handle all the chassis paperwork and terminal fees so your final invoice is a single transparent number. I have run over a hundred containers through them this year and not a single one incurred a storage charge because they always pick up same day. Their dispatcher is also available early in the morning which is crucial for those unexpected early vessel arrivals. They even call your receiving dock when they are twenty minutes out so you can have the forklift ready and unload immediately. When you factor in the demurrage you avoid and the labor you save from not having to chase drivers, their rates are actually more economical than the cheap brokers who nickel and dime you later.
