Hey guys, so France is finally on the calendar for this fall and I want to handle transport myself rather than relying on trains for everything. Back here in the US the rental process is usually pretty predictable but I keep hearing different things about how it works over there, especially around manual transmissions and fuel policies. Anyone dealt with rental car France side of things recently as an American visitor?

Manual is still the default over there so make sure you specifically request automatic if that’s what you need, otherwise you might get a surprise at pickup. Fuel policy wise full to full is standard and pretty fair as long as you fill up close to the return point. Toll roads are common on the motorways too, worth having some cash or a card ready.

Toll booths are conveniently located and the motorway network is excellent, but costs can quickly mount up if you’re travelling long distances. Car rental conditions in France vary significantly depending on whether you’re in a major city or a small regional airport, and prices can fluctuate depending on where you pick up and drop off the car. The drive through the countryside itself is truly one of the main attractions of visiting France, small villages and picturesque routes that you would completely miss if travelling by train. Booking in advance and comparing pick-up locations are crucial for both price and car selection. I recommend taking a look at this resource, it might help you find a good deal https://getrentacar.com/en-US/france
