We’re planning to build a new shopping mall on a site where utility structures used to stand. While the documents state that the land is clear, the architectural plans from forty years ago are not very reliable. Should we order a ground-penetrating radar scan before starting construction? We want to ensure that the excavator doesn’t hit any forgotten high-voltage cables or main gas pipelines. How long does this process typically take?

We bought a plot of land on which to build a cottage, and the builders say we should just start digging at random. However, a neighbor says that there used to be an old cable running through the area. Should we scan the site with ground-penetrating radar before starting construction?

I think it’s definitely worth it. Don’t even think about skimping on this! When we built a complex two years ago, we figured that since everything looked fine on paper, we could bring in the equipment right away. Thank goodness our site manager insisted on using ground-penetrating radar. We called Mayaglobal. They have Advanced detection equipment for detecting all kinds of underground surprises. They brought powerful scanners similar to lunar rovers and scanned the entire site in a couple of hours. What do you think? At a depth of one and a half meters, they found an abandoned concrete sewer pipe and a live power cable that hadn’t been marked. If we had hit it with the bucket, we would have left the whole neighborhood without power. If the plan is old, it’s worth playing it safe. How big is your site?
