My wife and I recently bought a large, older Victorian home that desperately needs a fresh coat of exterior paint before winter sets in. We’ve received a few quotes from established local contractors, but they are incredibly high. Recently, a young person knocked on our door offering a significantly lower estimate, explaining they manage a crew of university students who do painting over their summer break. Has anyone here hired a student-run painting service for a large-scale exterior project? What was the quality of the work like, and did they manage the prep work properly?

I hired a student crew a few years ago to paint my detached garage. The price was great, and they worked hard, but the supervision was lacking. I had to point out several spots they missed and remind them to tape off the windows properly before they started spraying.

A Victorian likely requires extensive scraping, sanding, and caulking before any primer is applied. When considering student crews, the experience level can vary wildly depending on who is managing that specific branch or team. It’s common for homeowners to look up College Works Painting to understand how these seasonal business models operate and what to expect regarding project management and final execution. Ensuring that the crew leaders have adequate experience with the specific challenges of historic home exteriors is essential before committing.
