Club membership tips

Thinking about joining a private membership club, but I’m not totally sure how the whole process works. Some people say there’s paperwork, others say it depends on the area, and some mention waiting lists. I’d love to hear from someone who’s gone through it – what should I expect, what should I avoid, and how do you even know if a place is legit before signing anything?
